Warrnambool Girl - Kathryn
Ross Wins World Cup Silver Medal
Congratulations
go to Kathryn Ross following her performance in World Cup 1 in Bled,
Slovenia. Kathryn joined Grant Bailey in the trunk and arms mixed double
scull to claim second place behind a Ukraine crew.
The result follows Kathryn’s silver medal last year at the Beijing
Paralympics. This year’s new pairing with Grant Bailey reflects well on
Australia’s strength in the event and the crew’s preparation under coach
Pedro Albissier.
Homophobia in Sport Rife, Study Finds
The
first comprehensive survey of the experience of gay, lesbian, bisexual
and transgender (GLBT) people in community sport in Australia has found
that despite improvements in attitudes over the past decade,
discrimination and abuse is still widespread.
Lead
author of the Come Out To Play report, Dr Caroline Symons, said the study
provided clear evidence that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender
people need greater support from sporting clubs. “One of the key
recommendations from this study is that clubs be assisted to develop
codes of practice that respect, welcome and include GLBT people,” she
said.
“We
also need to develop greater awareness of the need for inclusion and
support for the GLBT community from educators of teachers, coaches and
sports managers.”
