Noel Donaldson joins Rowing Victoria

One of the Big White Vs most passionate and well-known son’s has officially joined Rowing Victoria as Head Coach.

Known across the world as the coach of Australia’s Oarsome Foursome, New Zealand’s pair of Bond and Murray, and most recently Head Coach at the VIS, the Sport Australia Hall of Famer and Rowing Australia Life Member joins RV on November 1. Noel’s charged with providing direction, upholding a culture and sense of pride for the Victorian High-Performance rowing program and the Victorian State Teams whilst also developing and providing leadership and instruction to the broader Victorian coaching network.

Rowing Victoria President Joseph Joyce said, "we are delighted to embrace Noel back to his spiritual home of the Victorian rowing community. As Head Coach and Lead of the Victorian Pathway program we look forward to him continuing the great work in the Pathway program, developing and mentoring the next golden ages of Victorian Olympians".

Grant funding from Sport Australia with the support of Rowing Australia cannot be discounted as it has enabled RV to secure Noel’s services for what is an extremely exciting period of time in the Victorian Rowing journey. With the Paris Games less than 3 years away with Los Angeles soon after, if Tokyo is anything to go by, many of our current athletes under Noel’s guidance and support, with that of our Club coaches will no doubt feature in these and the interim, lead up international regattas.

We welcome Noel on board and wish him and the Big White V unparallel success.

COVID RESTRICTIONS UPDATE

At the time of writing the new CHO Directions as to how we operate at 80% of the Victorian population being double vaccinated have yet to be released.

Once these are released, RV will, as always, provide you as soon as possible the details as to how they are to be applied across our community. As we have seen already across other sectors, there is some inconsistency with how the Directives are implemented, so please continue to be patient whilst we work through and digest the multiple restrictions and opportunities.

Upcoming works on Peppercorn Lawn 5 - 7 November 2021

Please note that two palm trees will be relocated to the Peppercorn Lawn area west of Richmond Rowing Club with works occurring between Thursday 5th November and Saturday 7th November 2021. This will involve a number of truck and crane movements as outlined below.

Please ensure that all boat trailers are removed from the area in front of, and adjacent to, the Peppercorn Lawn area so that these works can progress smoothly.

The works involve:

  • As part of the reinstatement works following tunnelling, two replacement palms are now being planted back in the gardens adjacent to Peppercorn Lawn.
  • Over the three days of works, there will be a number of trucks arriving to site via Boathouse Drive and traffic management will be in place. Larger trucks will need to turn in front of Richmond Rowing Club in order to reverse into site. A section of Peppercorn Lawn will also be fenced off during these works (See map).

  • The works will begin on Thursday 5 November, with preparation of the site. The first of the palm trees will be transported to site and craned into position on Friday 6 November 2021. The second palm tree will be planted on Saturday 7 November

  • During the planting of the first tree on Friday 5 November, the Capital City Trail will be closed from Boathouse Drive to Princes Bridge, Friday 5 November from 6am to 6pm. The closure will allow for the crane set up, tree lift and transportation, and demobilization.

  • All pedestrians and cyclists will be detoured up via St Kilda Road pedestrian signals. As part of the detour, cyclists will be requested to dismount and walk their bikes along the Arts Centre / Hamer Hall ramp.

  • The second palm tree will be planted on Saturday 6th November, this palm planting will not require a crane and the Capital City Trail will remain open, however traffic management will be in place as the truck deliverers the second palm to site.

Impact of COVID-19 on Community Sport.

As you will be well aware, COVID-19 has continued to wreak havoc on community sport in Australia over the past 18 months. This latest report from the Australian Sports Foundation highlights that community clubs all over Australia are facing unprecedented challenges, with more than 1 in 10 clubs at risk of going under during this ongoing crisis.

The report highlights serious and urgent challenges impacting community sports clubs in the areas of financial instability, declining participation and declining volunteering. The report makes it clear that sports clubs are struggling financially; not only is community sport largely shut down but traditional fundraising methods are also hampered or impossible due to Covid restrictions.

If you have time, we encourage you to join the upcoming ASF 45min webinar https://covid.sportsfoundation.org.au/webinarregistration where the ASF team of Sports Fundraising experts will walk you through some fundraising ideas through COVID and beyond. The webinar will cover in detail:
