  Local Legend

Rowing Victoria's Weekly Local Legend   -  David England

Australian former rowing coxswain, coach, and rowing administrator. He was an Australian national champion, an Olympian, and won a bronze medal at the 1977 World Rowing Championships.

England's senior club rowing was from the Melbourne University Boat Club. In Melbourne Uni colours he contested and won the national lightweight eight title twice at the Australian Rowing Championships in 1972 and 1979. England was in the stern of the Australian heavyweight eight selected to compete at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. That crew finished in overall fifth place.

David has continued his impressive involvement in the sport in many ways from coaching to administration. Following the 1984 Kings Cup Regatta, David's career took him overseas for 17 years. During this time he was an active member of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club - Rowing Section  (1984-1993) and Walton Rowing Club, England (1993 - 2001). Upon return to Australia, he immersed himself actively at MUBC and assisted the Women's squad there as a coach. He was Finance Director of Rowing Australia from 2007 - 2009 and also has served as a board member.

Following significant consultation with Parks Victoria, Rowing Victoria has been advised that the dredging program will continue from Winter 2021 in a number of sections of the Yarra river from around Herring Island to the World Trade Centre. Specific to the rowing community:

  • The Southern Arch of the Morrell st Bridge and adjacent Botanic Gardens landing.
  • The “VRA Bend”, between Banks RC and the Henley Judges Tower
  • The Princes Bridge Southern and Northern Arches.

Additional areas have been highlighted for action including the section between the 800m start and Swan St bridge and the Caroline St landing.

This notification is great news for both the safety and competitive needs of the Victoria Rowing Community.

  waterways and safety

Waterways and Safety

Let's Keep our waterways safe and be mindful of everyone out on the water during the Christmas period.

With the weather warming up, boat traffic will increase. Specifically for the Yarra, the number of commercial vessel journeys will grow, so please continue to be alert towards all river users. Please refresh your knowledge of the waterway rules, acknowledging the direction of travel and bridge arch use.

Megaphone Restrictions:

All coaches using megaphones are to abide by the restrictions below. Taking extra caution around residential areas is kindly appreciated.

We strongly recommend that clubs/schools transition to using radios and radio boxes rather than megaphones.

Yarra River Electric Boat Update

As those on the Yarra would attest to, the numbers of Electric Boats (Go Boats & On a Boats) have increased significantly in the couple of months. Go Boats had a 250% increase in bookings last month than 12 months ago.  Unfortunately, the number of reported incidents and near misses between these boats and rowing boats has also increased, some causing significant and irreparable damage to rowing equipment. We have been fortunate, that the injuries inflicted upon rowers has been relatively minor.

Rowing Victoria this week met with representatives of the Electric Boat companies, Parks Victoria and Maritime Safety Victoria to develop solutions to ensure all river users can enjoy the river safely, responsibly and respectfully.

To view the discussed implementations and guidelines please click here.
