  Local Legend

Rowing Victoria's Weekly Local Legend - Anthony Edwards

This week's Local Legend is the great Anthony Edwards, former Australian Lightweight Rower. Edwards' is a five-time Olympian, triple Olympic medallist, a World Champion, and a six-time Australian National Champion.

His rowing career began at St Patrick's College Ballarat, stroking the First's crew to a very long awaited victory of The Head of the Lake. Edwards' then continued his commitment to rowing out of the Ballarat City Rowing Club, he soon after represented his first National Team, The Under 23 Australian Rowing Team in 1992.

Edwards' then continued to consistently make the selection on to State and National Teams, before his first Olympic debut in 1996 in the Men's Lightweight Double Scull achieving a Bronze Medal. This was the first of five Olympics for Anthony. He later represented Australia in the Men’s Lightweight Four (two-seat) at the 2000 Olympic games and back to back in the 2004 Olympic Games, both times attaining a Silver Medal. Continuing his love for the sport he was back again for the 2008 Olympic Games placing ninth, and completing his last Olympic campaign at the 2012 Games placing fourth for his last race in the Australian Men's Lightweight Four.

Post Rowing Career Edwards' was lead to working as the State Development Officer for Rowing Tasmania and has extensive involvement in the selection of Tasmanian state crews. In 2010 he was inducted as a member of the Rowing Victoria Hall of Fame. Anthony has been a great inspiration to the Victorian and Australian Rowing Communities over many years, and his name will undoubtedly go down in history.
