We’re Back!    - Ballarat Regatta Success

After a COVID enforced break of 240 days, competitive rowing returned to Victoria on Saturday at the RV Schools Regatta in Ballarat. It was a great day for all!

As the ring of steel was still in place, only country schools were able to compete, but this did not stop an enthusiastic group of school kids hitting the water; many for their first competitive race.

The Rowing Victoria COVID safe principles developed to keep everyone safe were successfully implemented with many thanks to those involved, from the competitions commission, RV team, Ballarat schools and rowing associations, competitors and the BROs/ volunteers on the day who helped smooth the waters!

Although the lack of spectators (due to COVID restrictions) did make for a different experience, our ability to live stream the event thanks to the Paul Media live team in Ballarat did allow all parents and friends the ability to watch racing safely.

Following the “get in, compete, get out” requirement, a new competition schedule was developed and successfully implemented. All crews stayed on the water between their two races before heading home and the regatta (in blustery conditions) finished on-time. Well done all.

Next stop; the Barwon!

  RV Geelong Regatta

RV Regatta – Geelong has been rescheduled by 1 week

With the easing of COVID restrictions and the expected ability to travel between Metro and Regional Victoria in the near future, Rowing Victoria has made the decision to postpone The RV Regatta – Geelong by one week to the 21st of November. We believe the one week delay will greatly increase the opportunity for the wider Victorian Rowing Community to participate in the event.

Entries for the Regatta will be open from midday Monday the 9th of November.

  Local Legend

Rowing Victoria's Weekly Local Legend -  Hannah Every-Hall

This week's Local Legend is Hannah Every-Hall, a former Australian Rowing Team member and Olympian. Hannah started her rowing in country Victoria but regarded it as more social than competitive. Hannah got more serious when she went to university in Melbourne where she was studying sports psychology. She enjoyed it so continued. Before that her main sport was netball.

Eighteen months into the sport of Rowing Hannah was named in the Nations Cup (under-23) team in the lightweight double, which went on to win gold. Hannah was apart of numerous State and National teams from 1999-2002. Hannah then decided it was time to start her family and made her come back into the sport of rowing in 2010. During the peak of her career, she had to manage the demanding roles of mother, wife, and working as a sports nutritionist.

Hannah's success during this period of time saw her reach the following major competitions including; 2010 World Championships Women’s Lightweight Double Scull – Placing Fourth, 2011 World Championships Women’s Lightweight Double Scull – Placing Fifth, 2012 Olympic Games Women’s Lightweight Double Scull stroke - Placing Fifth, and the 2014 World Championships Women’s Lightweight Quad Scull stroke – Placing Silver.

Since her retirement from rowing, she has continued to put a lot back into the sport being on both the FISA and Australian Athletes Commission and chairing the Australian Commission, Hannah has also taken her knowledge and love for rowing to coaching at Wesley College and Powerhouse Rowing Club.

Do you know somebody who is a local rowing legend?

Vale Roger Moore

It is with great sadness to inform you of the passing this week of an amazing former senior coach, Roger Moore.

He had enjoyed an astral career as a light-weight rower at Geelong, and as a senior coach to both Monash University and Victoria, winning Intervarsity and Kings Cup on multiple occasions.

Following an astral career as a lightweight in Geelong, Roger coached for a short time at Brighton Grammar and Yarra Yarra RC and he had great success with Monash University Intervarsity, and as the Victorian Kings Cup Coach—mainly with Monash rowers

Roger then travelled to South Australia for the 1972-1973 season and had taken up a role as Marketing Manager at Coopers Brewery.

At Adelaide University Boat Club, he commanded respect from his charges, and he had the rare talent of imbuing his athletes to go into battle, full of the belief of impending victory.

Many at AUBC would have rowed into oblivion for Roger. He transcended generations at AUBC, and Pembroke School, and leaves his mark indelibly on the fabric of both rowing clubs.

He was genuinely loved and respected by all who were lucky enough to know him.

Our condolences go to Helen, and his family. Roger was 81.

Vale, Roger. Well rowed, and thank you from all your many far-flung AUBC and Victorian Rowing friends.
