IMPORTANT NEW COVID-19 MEASURES FOR VICTORIAN REGATTAS

As you may not be aware for regattas and events to proceed within the current COVID environment, a range of protocols to ensure the safety of the community have needed to be developed, approved by Gov’t then implemented. These include the well documented COVIDSafe principles of Social distancing, record keeping and enhanced hygiene measures.

Rowing Victoria continues to work with the Dept of Sport & Rec, VICSPORT and the Department of Health and Human Services to ensure we’re able to hold regattas within a COVIDSafe environment.

Rowing Victoria's Weekly Local Legend   - John Dutton

John is 75, has been rowing for 12 years and has Multiple Sclerosis.

Johns’ interest in rowing started when his 2 boys were in the 1st 8+ at Melbourne Grammar. He and his wife were watching the boys in 2008 at the National Water Sports Centre, Carrum

After receiving a diagnosis of MS in 2003 John had reduced his many sporting activities. He had been a keen cricketer, runner and rock climber.  John was talking to John and Pamela Whiting and they invited him to try sculling as an activity that was balanced, used both sides of the body equally and maintained fitness. Single sculling also provides a challenge whilst being independent. In 2009 John bought his own single and has been rowing 3 to 4 times a week since then.

And Johns’ stellar career took off from there!!!!!

His neurologist has praised the effects of rowing in the slowing of the deterioration of his MS.

You will see John wearing a PFD. He is sure that this doesn’t hamper his rowing and provides reassurance, should there be an accident. John says that one of the many benefits of the rowing community he has found at the Yarra is their willingness to help any rower in trouble. Other benefits are the community spirit, the introduction to rowers of all ages and abilities, the coffee therapy after a row, and the ability to enjoy the Yarra.

When you see John on the river, say hello. He will always return a smile, though probably not a wave when he is in the boat.

Securing Your Regatta Marquee

A friendly reminder as we head into the busy regatta season that many regatta venues do not allow the use of pegs to secure your marquees/tents and they must be appropriately secured using adequate weights.

The Rowing Victoria Recommendations for the provision of weights to secure tent/marquees during events will be able to assist you in understanding which venues you are not allowed to use pegs and how much weight is required to safely secure your marquee.

Waterways and Safety

Let's Keep our waterways safe and be mindful of everyone out on the water during the Christmas period.

With the weather warming up, boat traffic will increase. Specifically for the Yarra, the number of commercial vessel journeys will grow, so please continue to be alert towards all river users. Please refresh your knowledge of the waterway rules, acknowledging the direction of travel and bridge arch use.

Megaphone Restrictions:

All coaches using megaphones are to abide by the restrictions below. Taking extra caution around residential areas is kindly appreciated.

We strongly recommend that clubs/schools transition to using radios and radio boxes rather than megaphones.

To view or purchase Radios please click here.
