MESSAGE FROM THE STATE HEAD COACH AND CHAIR SELECTORS:

Wow! It is so exciting to see the activity on our waterways in late April. It’s almost like the peak school season earlier in the year. Hopefully I don’t miss anyone but we are seeing the 39 newly selected Rowing Australia Under-age rowers, the newly selected RV Masters crews and all the other Masters training for the upcoming State and National Championships, the University College and University rival crews in full force, the HP Clubs year 12 recruiting days, the various learn to row programs and everyone else.

Thank you to Barwon Rowing Club and their waterway for regularly hosting our selection activities particularly while Carrum overcomes its blue green algae problems – we are nearly there with that. And the “Jewel in the Crown” the RA NTC Olympic bound crews will be coming to Nagambie next weekend for some trial racing while SIRC overcomes its own blue green algae problems. Victorian Rowing take another bow after a great National Championships with our 3 big eights wins.

Let’s keep the momentum rolling at all levels of our sport and make this non lockdown winter the best ever. Be safe out there. Extra people and shorter days mean we need to look out for one another and keep our lights on. Go the big white “V”.

2021 Anzac Day Indoor Rowing Challenge

Rowing Australia and Rowing NZ have announced the 2021 Anzac Day Indoor Rowing Challenge. The event to take place from dawn to dusk on Sunday 25 April will see Australians and New Zealanders unite to record 2504 metres, as many times as possible, at home, on their indoor rowing machines.

The number, 2504, signifies the date of Anzac Day, 25.04.2021, with participants encouraged to log their metres online and donate to either RSL Australia’s ANZAC Appeal or the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services Association.

River Safety - Bow and Stern lights

Bow and Stern lights

With the dark mornings now upon us it is crucial that all rowers who are on the water (and coaches on bikes and powerboats) between sunset and sunrise all have adequate lighting for your safety and the safety of others.

Rowing boats, in restricted visibility and between sunset and sunrise, are required to exhibit;

  • Two all-round white lights, one attached to the boat at or near the forward or bow end, and one attached to the boat at or near the stern end.
  • Bow light - A continuous white light is considered acceptable if it is visible in clear conditions from a distance of 1 kilometre.
  • Stern light - A flashing white light is considered acceptable if it flashes at least once per second and is visible in clear conditions from a distance of 1 kilometre.
  • Not withstanding the above, it is considered acceptable for a light to be masked so as not to interfere with the vision of the vessel’s occupants, provided at least one light is visible from any direction (see diagram below)

Metro Tunnel Project follow up - tunneling

Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) should pass beneath Peppercorn Lawn and by the Rowing clubs in the next 1-2 weeks.

We are not expecting there to be any noise or vibration issues for the rowing clubs, and we will continue to monitor the progress of the TBMs as they pass.
