Rowing Victoria's weekly featured athlete - Drew Ginn

Drew Ginn, winner of three gold medals and member of the Oarsome Foursome.

Ginn was a gifted athlete, having won school colours in four different disciplines at Melbourne’s Scotch College. He had impressed the Foursome’s coach, Noel Donaldson, when he went overseas with Australia’s under-23 eight in 1994. The Oarsome Foursome compromised of athletes James Tomkins, Mike McKay, Nick Green and Drew Ginn.

Ginn and Tomkins, 10 years his senior, later teamed up, and won the 1999 pairs world championship. However like most elite athletes no road to success is linear. Ginn battled through injury, forcing him to withdraw from Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

However making a remarkable come back two years later. Ginn talked with Tomkins about trying again … and they agreed to give it a go. They rowed perfectly to win gold in Athens in 2004.

Drew Ginn lived a remarkable rowing career, for more information on his story and success please visit Australian Rowing History.

Dredging work continues along the Yarra River with the Dredge currently being situated on the North side of the river between Punt Rd Bridge and Cremorne Rail Bridge.

The dredging area is considerable and will force rowers who are rowing downstream to cross onto the southern side of the river. When traveling in either direction please adhere to the following safety directions.

  • Proceed slowly and carefully whilst in the vicinity of the dredging works.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings by regularly looking behind you for buoys and other boats.
