Roger Wilson Nomination for Judy Patching award

Roger Wilson Nomination for Judy Patching award

Rowing Victoria would like to congratulate Roger Wilson on being announced as a runner up in the 2019 Julius L. Patching Official of the Year Award at the Victorian Olympic Council AGM.

“The voice of rowing” - Roger started his lifelong interest in rowing whilst at Brighton Grammar School.

He started his rowing at Brighton at the end of 1957 and finished in 1962 – including rowing in the school’s first two head of the river crews in 1961 and 1962.

Roger then joined Mercantile Rowing Club in 1963 and raced until 1967. His highest win was the national junior eights title at the first National Regatta at Ballarat in May 1966 in what Roger regarded as freezing conditions. No one will argue with you on that one.

Roger has been a long serving Vice-President at the Club and coached at Club crews in the seventies.

However Roger is perhaps best known for his coaching at Brighton Grammar from 1964 until 1979 with the last five years as Head of the River first eight coach. His crews did very well including the first final appearance by BGS in the Head of the River in 1976 finishing third behind the two Geelong schools on the Barwon!

Roger’s fame to the sport was to come through his course commentating. He started at Yarrawonga in 1966 and is still going strong over 50 years at most major rowing regattas in Victoria.

  Dredging

Dredging and Metro Tunnel Works

The dredging at the VRA landing is scheduled to start on the 18th of May and will be completed by the 10th of June. The start date is dependent on the processing time of a work permit for the works. To ensure the safety of the public and the river users, and to ensure that any Princes Bridge based rowers can access the river (this is subject to COVID-19 restrictions, with latest information available https://www.rowingvictoria.asn.au/news/20420-rowing-victoria-update-covid-19/)

Metro Tunnel Cross Passage Works

Works on the Peppercorn Lawn adjacent to Princes Bridge are due to start on the 5th May and will run for approximately 12 months, although all major works will be completed by February 2021. These works are required to create a cross passage between the two metro tunnels for emergency services and safety reasons.

Peppercorn Lawn Upgrades - Click here for more information.

The attached overview shows the revised work area and the haulage route. All access will be behind the sheds, and there should be no change to parking arrangements. Working hours will be 7:00am to 6:00pm Monday to Friday, and 7:00am to 1:00pm Saturday.

  Covid 19 Update

UPDATED: STAGE 3 Restrictions Rowing Clubs advised to suspend operations.

For Rowing Victoria's recommendations for Covid- 19 Link here.

Rowing Victoria have been informed that the Ministers Office and the Premiers office have supported the recent comments by the Victorian Chief Health Officer in relation to the use of paddle craft as a legitimate form of ‘exercise’.

This is a great first step towards getting back on the water however we acknowledge that at present, the Victoria Chief Health Officer has also continued to advise that both indoor and outdoor recreational facilities must continue not to operate. The directive remains to stay home, not to travel for exercise and that exercise is to be for a limited time, not hours. Full list of restrictions can be found on our website linked below.

We would also like to remind the members of our community and clubs to support the Covid 19 App.
