How does the new Pathways Program benefit you?

The Victorian Pathway Program has several arms to it including:

  • Encouraging school rowers to keep rowing after school and engagement in the club system.
  • Pathway program for Under 18 rowers to represent their state in the Pathway regatta at underage selection trials.
  • High Performance (HP) Clubs and schools working together to identify the best talent to go to Junior trials (Under 19) for their chance to represent Australia at Junior World Championships.
  • HP Clubs working together to support the strongest Under 21 and Under 23 athletes on to national teams.

National High Performance Talent Pathway

  1. Australia’s strategy for the development of elite athletes is known as the National Talent Pathway Program (NTPP) . It is aligned to the Australian Sports Commission’s High Performance Strategy – Australia’s Winning Edge (AWE).

The NTPP has been created to capitalise and expand on the work of the earlier High Performance Development Program as Rowing strives to meet AWE performance outcomes for Tokyo and beyond to Los Angeles in 2024.

The NTPP approaches the talent pipeline with a broader focus to include:

  • Traditional pathway development including talent identification
  • A greater focus on National Team retention
  • The US-Based Australian Program

The NTPP aims to ensure that athletes are exposed to the full continuum of development along the National Talent Pathway. These opportunities are delivered in Victoria through the Victorian Pathway Program.

The strategies that underpin the NTPP focus on tailoring solutions to local environments. Each State has its own unique challenges and opportunities that require a flexible approach.

Clubs are the primary delivery mechanism in recruiting and developing athletes and coaches throughout the National Talent Pathway. The objective is to engage clubs who already deliver significant national outcomes to create even better depth and management of the overall talent pathway.

The current Victorian clubs endorsed by the Victorian Pathway Program as Pathway Performance Clubs are:

Rowing Australia’s talent pipeline extends to athletes undertaking study in US college programs, with opportunities provided for men and women to trial for the Under 23 (U23) Australian Rowing Team in targeted boat categories under what is known as the US-Based Australian Program.
